From August 19–23, 2024, the Program Manager and the Technical Team of the Socio-Economic Empowerment Program (SEEP) at Fatin Hakmatek Baucau conducted field visits to beneficiaries receiving support for small-scale economic activities. These initiatives are funded by the DIMES donor through PRADET’s Safe House in Baucau.
The team visited 13 female beneficiaries: six from Baucau, three from Viqueque, and four from Lautém. The objective was to assess the progress, results, impacts, and challenges of their small businesses. The activities observed included 10 kiosks, one traditional weaving business, and two vegetable-selling businesses.
The beneficiaries visited had received support at different intervals:
- 6 beneficiaries in June 2024
- 2 beneficiaries in 2023
- 2 beneficiaries in 2022
- 3 beneficiaries in 2019
Key Observations:
- Short-term Impact (2024 Group): Beneficiaries who recently started their activities have already shown significant psychological and physical improvements. The team noted increased happiness and a healthier appearance as these women began generating income to provide food and daily necessities for their children.
- Long-term Impact (2019–2023 Groups): Those supported in previous years have successfully diversified their businesses and now participate in women’s savings and loan groups. Their income has enabled them to fund their children’s education and invest in housing—either by purchasing construction materials for renovations or building entirely new homes. These women demonstrate high levels of self-confidence and overall well-being.
This economic empowerment initiative remains a vital part of PRADET’S mission to restore dignity and independence to women in Timor-Leste.
